Take Action

Gun violence is a preventable tragedy. There are simple, proven steps to reduce violence – like requiring a background check every time someone buys a gun.

The U.S. Congress and the Oregon Legislature have the opportunity to pass significant gun legislation. Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) have proposed a bill to expand background checks. In Oregon, we expect bills to expand background checks and to prevent child access to firearms to be introduced soon.

The Legislature will convene again in 2017 and many expect it will again consider the proposal to require a background check every time a gun is sold.

The House recently voted to add $19.5 million to improve the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS). The vote was bipartisan and all of Oregon's U.S. Representatives voted for it.

“Is there a gun where your child plays?” Asking this simple question is an important step every parent can take to help their kids stay safe. About one-third of homes with kids have guns, many left unlocked or loaded.
